ST. MARY’S LITURGY OF THE WORD PROGRAM
The Children’s Liturgy program helps children ages 5-13 understand the Gospel messages.  The program is held during the Sunday 9am Mass, whenever there are religious education classes.  During the readings and homily the children are brought to Fr. Platt Hall where the Gospel message for that Sunday is explained to them in age-appropriate terms.  No registration is necessary – just come to Mass.

We welcome volunteers to help present the Gospel messages.  You can present one or more Sundays throughout the year.  We will provide the readings and an interpretation of the Gospel for that day, or you can search out your own interpretation using several internet links we will provide.

IN AND ABOUT THE DIOCESE OF METUCHEN
Greetings from the Office of the Diaconate From Deacon Sam Costantino, Director for the Office of the Diaconate for the Diocese of Metuchen

Question # 3     Who are some famous deacons through history?

There are a number of well-known deacons.  One of the most famous is St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226), although a surprising number of people don’t realize that he was a deacon.  As a deacon, Francis was well known for his homilies and for his outreach to the poor.

St. Stephen, the first martyr of the New Testament, who is often listed as a deacon, along with six companions in Acts 6:1-6.  Stephen was so effective and prophetic in his preaching that he enflamed the authorities and he was stoned to death.

Through our history, then we find deacons bringing people together and to Christ, serving as preachers, teachers, administrators of the Church’s good, and martyrs.  Deacons today are filled by the same Spirit at their ordinations to fulfill the same roles in the contemporary Church.
